North & South is a BBC television drama series based on the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell. It was directed by Brian Percival and first aired in 2004. The series follows the story of Margaret Hale, a young woman from the south of England who moves to the industrial north and becomes caught up in the conflicts between the mill workers and their wealthy factory owners.
The TV series title is created by combining three distinct typefaces: "North" is displayed in Copperplate Gothic Thirty-Three BC, the "&" is presented in Caslon 540 Italic, and "South" is written in Snell Roundhand Script.
